The Story

Some antique lighting simply illuminates a room. Other pieces become part of its architecture.

This extraordinary circa-1920s bridge floor lamp is one of those rare objects whose beauty reveals itself slowly. From its elaborate openwork base to the slender aged-gold standard and richly pierced bridge arm above, nearly every element was designed to be seen.

And then there are the butterflies.

Two remarkable butterfly-form ornaments, each approximately 3.5 inches wide, rest along the lamp's standard. These are not simply decorative motifs cast permanently into the structure. Each butterfly is individually mounted and can be loosened, rotated and repositioned independently along the standard—an exceptionally unusual detail that gives the lamp an almost jewel-like quality.

We acquired this piece from an estate distinguished by an unusually fine collection of art and decorative objects, including several museum-caliber pieces. While that provenance does not establish a particular manufacturer, it provides meaningful context for a lamp whose craftsmanship and unusual ornamentation immediately stood apart.

At 57 inches tall, the lamp has the elegant proportions of the classic bridge reading lamps that transformed American interiors during the early decades of electric lighting. Its 12-inch projecting arm brings the light outward while the elaborate casting turns a practical form into something distinctly sculptural.

We have paired the antique lamp with a newly made ruffled white glass shade, chosen for its softly romantic silhouette and compatibility with the lamp's period character. The shade is contemporary and is not represented as original.

The lamp has been tested and is in working condition.

Romantic, architectural and wonderfully unexpected, this is the sort of antique that makes a collected room feel as though it has a story.

The Object

Bridge lamps were created to position light over a reading chair, writing desk or intimate seating area without requiring a table beneath them. Their distinctive projecting arms made them both functional and wonderfully architectural.

This example elevates that familiar form through an exceptional amount of decorative detail.

A richly modeled openwork base anchors the slender standard, while scrolling botanical ornament climbs into an elaborate pierced bridge. The pair of movable butterflies provides the final flourish—dimensional decorative elements that can be positioned independently rather than remaining fixed in a single orientation.

The exact manufacturer has not been identified. The lamp's construction, proportions and decorative vocabulary are consistent with American-market bridge lighting of the 1920s. Although period catalog research revealed related examples, we have intentionally avoided assigning this lamp to Sears, Rembrandt or another manufacturer without sufficient documentary evidence.

Its beauty does not require an uncertain attribution.
