EARLY 19TH CENTURY J. & W. RIDGWAY INDIA TEMPLE STONE CHINA COVERED DISH WITH STAND c.1825–1835
An exceptional early English stone china covered dish with its original matching stand, produced by J. & W. Ridgway (John & William Ridgway) of Staffordshire, England, in the celebrated India Temple pattern.
This desirable hexagonal covered serving form, dating to the early ironstone period circa 1825–1835, is richly decorated in cobalt blue transfer with an oriental riverside landscape, pagodas, figures, and boats, framed by a finely molded shell and scroll border. The domed lid is surmounted by an elaborate floral finial, and the dish rests securely within its original stand—an increasingly scarce survival as a complete set.
This covered serving form exemplifies the early ambition of Staffordshire potters to rival porcelain through finely potted stone china, combining architectural oriental scenery with sculptural molded relief characteristic of Ridgway’s most accomplished work of the 1820s.
The underside bears the printed shield mark “India Temple / Stone China / J.W.R.”, a documented Ridgway mark confirming early 19th-century production. These early stone china forms were luxury table wares, valued historically for their durability and decorative impact, and are now highly sought after by collectors of early English transferware.
