Laney Oxman Signed Sculptural Ceramic Vessel 24K Gold Figural Art

A remarkable signed sculptural ceramic vessel by celebrated American studio artist Laney Oxman, whose richly narrative work in ceramics and glass has been exhibited nationally and acquired by major museum and institutional collections.

Standing approximately 12.5 inches tall, this extraordinary piece exemplifies Oxman’s unmistakable visual language: distorted vessel forms, expressive figurative imagery, dense pattern, collage-like surfaces, provocative female imagery, black-and-white polka dots, roses, checkerboard motifs, saturated pink and teal, and lavish metallic gold.

Rather than functioning as a conventional vase, the work is conceived as a fully dimensional ceramic sculpture and art vessel, constructed from stacked and manipulated forms that create an exuberant, almost totemic silhouette. Curled black appendages, dimensional pink and teal terminals, sculptural protrusions, and modeled sections animate the exterior from every angle.

The central body incorporates female portraiture and still-life imagery layered with freely painted marks, gestural drawing, roses, dots, and graphic pattern. One side features a dramatically rendered female torso, while other surfaces incorporate additional figurative and fruit imagery, creating the sense of a constantly unfolding visual narrative.

The upper section opens into a broad flared chalice-like vessel, and its interior is itself a complete painting. A large expressive female figure emerges from sweeping coral and pink brushwork, surrounded by roses, golden passages, and fluid painterly movement. The extensive decoration inside and out reinforces the object’s role as sculpture rather than simple functional pottery.

Oxman deliberately developed this vocabulary after mastering traditional wheel-thrown ceramics. She has described her mature ceramic practice as a process of deconstructing form, distorting shapes, disguising surfaces with pattern and paint, and finishing the work in 24-carat gold. Her ceramic narratives focus particularly on women, opulence, memory, fantasy, and what she calls decadent nostalgia.

The artist’s name, Laney Oxman, is incorporated directly into the painted decoration on the lower body, creating an integral signature rather than a conventional underside mark.

Laney Oxman is an important figure in American studio craft and contemporary decorative art. She studied painting and sculpture at Pratt Institute, earned a BFA from the Corcoran College of Art, and received an MFA in ceramics and glass from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. Her career has spanned more than three decades and encompasses ceramics, glass, painting, and mixed media, with women serving as a central subject throughout her work.

Oxman’s work is represented in significant public collections including the Corning Museum of Glass, the White House Collection of American Crafts, the Clinton Presidential Library, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, and the Virginia Museum. She also represented the American Crafts Council in Paris at ObArt in 1987 and has participated in numerous museum exhibitions and solo presentations.

Her institutional importance is particularly well documented. The Corning Museum of Glass holds a 1988 Oxman goblet combining ceramic, glass, figurative imagery, polychrome decoration, and gold lustre, while the Museum of Arts and Design holds a 1989 work constructed from glass, whiteware clay, underglaze, and gold. These museum examples demonstrate how established Oxman’s distinctive mixed-media vessel language had become by the late 1980s.

Her honors include the Ronald and Anne Abramson Award for Excellence in Ceramics from the Corcoran College of Art and multiple Niche Awards for ceramics and glass. Her work has also appeared in major publications devoted to contemporary American craft and ceramics.
