OLD NORITAKE MORIMURA FLORAL CREAMER & LIDDED SUGAR BOWL

uifThe Story

There is a particularly beautiful moment in decorative history when the romance of the old world began encountering the geometry of the new.

This early Noritake serving pair captures that transition beautifully.

Delicate garden flowers tumble across warm ivory porcelain in shades of rose, coral, blue and fresh green, while above them runs an unexpectedly architectural border of black, burnished gold and cool blue-gray. The contrast transforms what might otherwise have been a traditional floral service into something distinctly more sophisticated.

Bearing the early Noritake M Japan mark associated with the Morimura era, the set appears to date to the 1920s–1930s.

The Object

The silhouettes are every bit as compelling as the decoration.

The creamer rises into an extraordinarily graceful sweeping spout, its curve balanced by a squared handle richly traced in gold.

The companion sugar bowl is beautifully proportioned, with matching angular handles and its original fitted lid. At its center sits perhaps our favorite detail: an unusual fluted finial divided into individual gilt panels, almost architectural in appearance.

The lid itself receives the same attention normally reserved for the body of a piece—another floral bouquet surrounded by a scalloped geometric frame and intricate gilding.

Look closely and the design continues to reveal itself: tiny dark tracery beneath the gold border, pale blue-gray accents tucked into geometric points, delicate gilt scrolls beneath the flowers, and fine gold lines following nearly every important contour.
