Vintage 1950s Pink & Gray Green Viking Ship Ceramic TV Lamp

Sale price$148.00

A wonderfully theatrical piece of mid-century lighting, this vintage ceramic Viking ship TV lamp transforms an ancient sailing vessel into a wonderfully whimsical 1950s decorative object.

The sculptural ship is glazed in an especially unusual pastel palette of soft gray-green with dusty rose and deeper raspberry-pink shading. The muted green sweeps across the enormous curved sail and hull, while pink accents emphasize the waves, prow and stern, shields, oars, and raised decorative details.

Dominating the composition is the ship's dramatically billowing sail, modeled with sweeping vertical folds and embellished with a raised figural crest. Below, a row of six rounded shields and projecting oars creates extraordinary dimensional detail across the side of the vessel.

The curled prow and stern rise gracefully at either end, while stylized rolling waves form the base, giving the entire lamp a sense of movement despite its substantial ceramic construction.

The concealed bulb sits within the open back of the ship. When illuminated, warm light filters through the openings beneath the shields and around the ceramic structure, producing the soft indirect glow for which 1950s TV lamps were designed.

TV lamps became enormously popular during the early television era, when small decorative lamps were placed on or near television sets to provide gentle ambient illumination while watching. Manufacturers embraced wonderfully imaginative forms ranging from panthers and horses to fish, birds, and sailing ships, making surviving examples highly collectible examples of mid-century decorative lighting.

This particularly elaborate Viking ship form has wonderful crossover appeal between Mid-Century Modern, 1950s kitsch, nautical décor, fantasy décor, Hollywood Regency, and collected maximalist interiors.

The glaze is especially appealing. Rather than the more commonly encountered brown or earth-tone ship lamps, this example combines a speckled gray-green ground with airbrushed pink shading, giving the piece a softer and far more decorative character.

At approximately 12 inches wide and 10.5 inches high, the lamp has substantial sculptural presence. It would be fabulous displayed on a bookshelf, console, bar cabinet, side table, or within a collected grouping of vintage lighting.

The lamp is currently fitted with a small interior bulb and rear-mounted switch and is photographed illuminated and functioning.

A wonderfully eccentric example of 1950s decorative lighting — part sculpture, part nautical fantasy, and part glowing mid-century stage set.
