This extraordinary vintage hanging lantern captures the unabashed glamour of the 1970s, when Victorian and Rococo-inspired ornament was reimagined through the theatrical lens of Hollywood Regency.

The centerpiece is its spectacular molded glass cylinder. Exceptionally intricate, the glass is covered in layers of floral sprays, scrolling forms, medallion-like motifs and finely textured fields. The pattern shifts between clearer and more heavily frosted areas, creating extraordinary depth.

When illuminated, the transformation is particularly beautiful. Light filters through the varying textures, revealing an almost lace-like pattern glowing within the glass.

Richly ornamented antiqued gold-tone metalwork frames the cylinder above and below. Deeply fluted forms, tiny beaded details, scrolling openwork galleries and a pendant finial create an elegant elongated silhouette reminiscent of much earlier European lighting.

At 22 inches tall and weighing 5.42 pounds, this is a substantial vintage fixture despite its slender proportions. Suspended from its decorative swag chain, it becomes a piece of sculptural jewelry for the room.

No maker's mark has been observed. Based upon its materials, construction and decorative vocabulary, the fixture appears consistent with American Hollywood Regency and Victorian Revival lighting of the late 1960s–1970s. Rather than assign a speculative manufacturer, we have chosen to leave the maker unattributed.

The Object

A vintage single-light swag lantern featuring an elaborate cylindrical molded glass shade suspended between highly ornamented antiqued gold-tone metal fittings.

The glass incorporates multiple decorative textures within one continuous composition, including floral and foliate motifs, scrolling ornament, medallion-like forms and stippled grounds. Its dimensional surface becomes especially dramatic when illuminated.

The upper and lower fittings feature deeply fluted architectural forms bordered by decorative beading and pierced scrollwork. A small pendant finial completes the lantern's elongated silhouette.
