Vintage Fred Roberts Japan Poppy Flower Ceramic Planter Cachepot
A wonderfully theatrical piece of vintage Japanese decorative pottery, this sculptural Fred Roberts Co. ceramic planter is covered in richly molded poppy blossoms, buds, and foliage in a quintessentially 1970s palette of mustard gold, burnt orange, creamy white, avocado green, and olive.
The entire exterior is modeled in high relief, with oversized flowers wrapping continuously around the oval body. Some blossoms are glazed in saturated orange and white, while others remain golden mustard, allowing the deeply sculpted petals, seed centers, buds, and leaves to create extraordinary texture across the surface.
A scalloped upper rim echoes the organic floral forms below, while the raised green foot gives the planter a finished, almost pedestal-like appearance. The fully glazed interior is finished in warm golden mustard and makes the piece suitable for use as a cachepot, decorative planter, or floral container.
The underside retains its original foil label reading “Fred Roberts Co. / Made in Japan,” identifying the piece as Japanese export ware distributed by Fred Roberts, the San Francisco importer known for decorative ceramics and giftware.
Fred Roberts was not the pottery manufacturer itself, but rather an American importer and purveyor of Japanese decorative goods. Pieces bearing the company label were produced in Japan for the U.S. market and are now collected for their distinctive mid-century and 1970s styling.
The bold dimensional flowers and earthy saturated glaze colors place this example firmly within the exuberant decorative language of the late 1960s to 1970s. Its sculptural form and vivid botanical decoration make it equally appealing with or without a plant.
Perfect for Hollywood Regency, Palm Beach Regency, 1970s interiors, maximalist décor, botanical styling, vintage eclectic spaces, and collected interiors.
