Vintage Solimene Vietri Campagna Gallina Large Covered Casserole, Hand Painted Italian Chicken Pottery

A spectacular piece of Italian ceramic artistry, this substantial Solimene Vietri covered casserole brings the unmistakable warmth and exuberance of the Amalfi Coast to the table.

Hand painted in Vietri sul Mare, Italy, the large lidded serving vessel features Solimene's wonderfully whimsical Campagna Gallina chicken motif. Stylized white hens parade across a rich ochre and caramel ground, punctuated by deep blue dotted borders, burgundy florals, fresh green foliage and delicate blue detailing.

The decoration continues generously around both the casserole and its fitted lid, making this an exceptionally decorative piece from every angle. A rounded hand-painted finial crowns the lid, while substantial integrated side handles give the vessel its classic Italian serving form.

Remove the lid to reveal a beautifully glazed terracotta-red interior, a striking contrast to the colorful exterior. The underside exposes the traditional warm red clay body and bears the distinctive SOLIMENE® / VIETRI – MADE IN ITALY bird mark.

At approximately 13 inches across the handles and nearly six pounds, this is no petite piece of tableware. Its impressive scale transforms it into a true statement object—equally captivating filled for an abundant Mediterranean table or displayed on a kitchen island, open shelving, sideboard or dining-room console.

Solimene's ceramics are closely associated with the centuries-old pottery tradition of Vietri sul Mare on Italy's Amalfi Coast. VIETRI identifies its Campagna Gallina collection as hand painted by Solimene artisans in Vietri sul Mare and crafted from traditional terra cotta.

The hand-applied brushwork is part of its appeal: subtle variations in the ochre ground, individual chickens, borders and botanical details give the piece the unmistakable character of artisan-painted Italian pottery rather than mass-produced transferware.

The large covered form is considerably harder to encounter than the plates, bowls and smaller serving pieces commonly seen from the collection, making this an especially appealing find for collectors of Solimene, Vietri ceramics and exuberant Italian tableware.

It is a piece that feels wonderfully at home in the Eclectic Whimsy world—theatrical, collected, colorful and unapologetically charming.

Condition

Vintage condition. Please review all photographs closely as they form an important part of the description. Variations in brushwork, glaze and coloration are characteristic of hand-painted artisan pottery and contribute to the individuality of the piece.

If you've confirmed absolutely no chips, cracks or repairs, Darby, I would change this to “Excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks or repairs.” That's stronger and important at the $349 price point.
